PRUNE FACES NOT ALLOWED

A smile on your face will attract more smiles than frowns! —Jay O’Dell

Proverbs 17:22, A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones.

I love being around happy people! Those people who whine and complain put a drain on my nerves! I was reminded the other day that the only one in control of your joy is… YOU! You can dictate how you respond to situations when they arise. You can get down in the dumps and whine and complain or you can put a smile on your face understanding that God has allowed this trial to come into your life. You have been given the awesome privilege to share Jesus through your trial! Will you have a prune face or will you pucker up with a smile and share how Jesus has blessed you with this opportunity? Will you bring honor and glory to Him or will you scare people off?

GIVE UNTIL IT HURTS

I rather think there is an immense shortage of Christian charity among so-called Christians. -Truman

2 Corinthians 9:7, Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.

Have you ever been around someone that is as stingy as a hungry baby with a bottle? When an offering plate is passed, they ask for change for a five-dollar bill. Not because they don’t have the money to put it all in but because they are just that stingy! If they can’t get change, look out because the whining will begin. I knew I should’ve gotten change before I came! I won’t be coming back here! Why don’t they have change machines in the lobby of the church?

Really folks, there are people that way. I truly hope you are not one of them. You see, God loves a cheerful giver! He loves it when we give our tithes and offerings! He loves when we give our time for the work of the Lord! He loves when we give our talents for the cause of Christ! Are you being stingy with what God has blessed you with? Are you robbing God?

THE BIBLE STANDS EVERY DAY

The Bible will live on even after we are long gone! – Jay O’Dell

Isaiah 40:8 The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever.

Just this week, several people jumped on board with the hoax of a broom standing on its’ own because of the Earth’s gravitational pull. It is amazing what we as a people will believe without facts or proof. Isn’t it crazy that, in our ignorance, we will believe almost anything on TV, social media, or even on a shelf at the grocery store?

I know one thing that has proven facts and I have seen proof that it works; God’s Word! God’s Word has stood the test of time! Many have tried to stamp it out! Many have attempted to water it down. Many have attempted to remove it from schools, government buildings, and public squares. But friend, the Word of God still stands!

If you could ask the Roman Emperors who tried to destroy the Bible and Christianity if it worked, they would say no. Voltaire thought within a hundred years the Bible would cease to exist. However, within that hundred years the Bible was being printed on the very printing press he used to print propaganda against God’s Word. These and many more like them have come and gone but the Word of God stands! And it will remain—forever!

THE BIBLE BRINGS HELP

The study of God's Word, for the purpose of discovering God's will, is the secret discipline which has formed the greatest characters. --J.W. Alexander

Romans 15:4, For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.

I am amazed at how many people follow man and not the Bible. In the early church, there was only the doctrine of the apostles. There were not any denominations because there was only the true Word of God and it prevailed. However, when man’s ideas were imposed on the bible, man started following men instead of the Word.

God is not the author of confusion friend. Anytime there is confusion, Satan is the author of it! If you and I were to get in the Bible more, reading it instead of what some man thinks of the Word, there would be less confusion and more repentance, confession, holiness, and Godly living! The Bible will bring help to a lost, dying, and hurting world when that world reads it!

READ THE BIBLE!

The Bible will keep you from sin or sin will keep you from the Bible!

Hebrews 4:12, For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

I read the testimony of a former Mormon minister one time. He said; “I grew up in a Mormon house, I got baptized in the Mormon church, I went to the Mormon seminary, and then I started reading my Bible.” That old boy got saved that morning. If you haven’t, why not be today! Have you read John 3:16 lately? Read it again and think what God gave for you to be saved- His only begotten Son!

STUBBORN MUCH?

A stubborn, bullheaded, rebellious heart will cost!

1 Samuel 8:19, Nevertheless the people refused to obey the voice of Samuel; and they said, Nay; but we will have a king over us;

In 2008, Harry R. Truman dismissed warnings about the impending eruption of Mt. St. Helens. The 83-year-old Truman said, “The mountain is a mile away.” “The mountain ain’t gonna hurt me.” Well, Harry along with 52 other people were killed when the volcano erupted.

Samuel warned the Israelites; A king will take your children; making them servants in the army and servants in the king’s house. The king will take your wealth; your flocks, your land, and the fruit of your labor. The king will take your servants making them his servants. No matter what Samuel told them, they had a rebellious stubborn heart and they did care what Samuel had to say. Their response; “we will have a king over us.” The Children of Israel got exactly what Samuel described to them: a self-centered, self-serving, greedy king that would eventually do exactly what the Lord had said.

Child of God, do you have a streak of stubbornness when it come to what God wants for your life? Do you always question the authority God has placed over you? Do you push doors open that God has closed? Stand by, that stubborn, bullheaded, rebellious heart is going to cost you some relationships, some money, and if you don’t repent and trust Jesus as your Saviour, it will cost you your life for eternity!

WHAT ARE YOU BUILDING?

The home is a preparation of life in Heaven. —Jay O’Dell

Psalm 127:1, Except the LORD build the house, they labour in vain that build it: except the LORD keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain.

I use to build HVAC systems for a living. On occasion we would have to install complete systems in homes that never had any duct work or anything in them. If we didn’t do our job inspecting the home it would cause huge problems for the company. It would cost me more money than I had quoted, it may cause mold and or mildew issues, or the system may not have even worked at all. In a nut shell, I would be a failure at installing systems.

The home is set up as an earthly example of what Heaven is going to be like. This is why Satan attacks the home. He doesn’t hold anything back either friend. He hits the home with everything he has got. From the time our children are born, there is a fight for their soul.

Before any child is born though, man ought to be preparing his home to share the Gospel with his children. Our ultimate goal for our home should be to build disciples for Jesus Christ. Anything less would be less than what God designed it for. So GET UP, GET READY and GO TO CHURCH so that you may lay a few blocks on your foundation of a godly home!

HOW YOU LOOKING

There was a Man who dwelt in the East centuries ago and now I cannot look at a sheep or a sparrow, a lily or a cornfield, a raven or a sunset, a vineyard or a mountain without thinking of Him. -Chesterton

Isaiah 46:9, Remember the former things of old: for I am God, and there is none else; I am God, and there is none like me,

How we look at things is determined by what we know about things. For example, I see my wife after a long day at work and a lump will form in my throat, a deep joy comes over my heart, and I greet her with a, “How was your day?”. This is all due to the fact I know her and I love her. Not good enough for yah? Well, consider a man who has been told he only has a few weeks to live. All of a sudden he is faced with the knowledge of the brevity of life. How he looks at his life, his country, and the world he lives in will change in a short period of time.

Now, consider if you knew Jesus, the One who gave His life on Calvary’s hill for your sin, as your Saviour. How you look at the lost would change. How you look at the drunk would change. How you invest your money would change. Your whole life would change because of what you know about what Jesus did for you!

HOLINESS IS POSSIBLE

It is a mistake to suppose that God does not want us to be holy until death, for that would mean that He wants us to be unholy until death.  God does not want us to be unholy at any time. -Anonymous

Romans 12:1-2, I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

To say, “I cannot be holy”, is to say, “God is a liar”. For God has commanded us to be holy. The catch is, in and of ourselves we cannot be holy. We must have the Holy Ghost of God living in us. We cannot be holy without being saved. We cannot be saved without repenting of our sin and trusting Jesus Christ as Saviour. Holiness begins with one act, then another, and then another.

GET IT TO THEM

World Missions begins across the street, not across the sea.—Scott Caudill

Acts 1:8, But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

As you go out today, do not forget about souls. Don’t forget about the man whose wife just left. Don’t forget about the woman whose husband just beat her. Don’t forget about the drug addict. Don’t forget about the prostitute. Don’t forget about the millionaire. For each of these, and millions of others just like them, need Jesus. You and I are the conduit in which God uses to get the Gospel to them.

Will you get it to them as the Lord commands?

THERE ARE DIAMONDS IN THERE!

Digging in the Word will find treasures you never knew were there.

2 Peter 1:1-4 Simon Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ, to them that have obtained like precious faith with us through the righteousness of God and our Saviour Jesus Christ: Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord, According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue: Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.

Encouragement is something each of us needs and desires. Peter was an encourager. He was a teacher and an inspirer. The later part of this portion of scripture tells us we have precious promises. There are so many different promises in the Word of God it would take a very long time to list each one but man what a journey that would be!

Looking for the promises of God in scripture is like looking for diamonds in sand. Each time you find one you are inspired and encouraged to keep digging. You pick it up and place it into a bag or some type of holding device. So that later on you can look back at them.

Not they I have ever found a diamond in sand but looking for those precious promises are the very same. We go digging for them by reading the Word of God. When we find one and we hide them in our heart. We bank those precious promises each of us need. It gives us encouragement and inspiration from the best source we have!

Battling discouragement? Pick up The Precious Promise Book- the Bible and read it, study it, memorize it, and last but not least apply it to your life!

THERE IS HOPE

When you say a situation or a person is hopeless, you are slamming the door in the face of God. -Allen

Titus 2:13, Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ; Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.

With God, there is hope! There is hope for the homeless! There is hope of the hopeless! There is hope for the drug addict! There is hope for the prostitute! There is hope for the pedophile! There is hope for the Sodomite! There is hope for the bankrupt! There is hope for the sinner in need of a Saviour! But wait, there is also hope for the pastor in the pulpit and for the people in the pews! There is hope for you friend!

I was reminded last night that no one has to face their burdens alone. If the lost man trusts Jesus Christ as Saviour they will never face their burdens alone! Hey Christian friend, we get to tell Jesus all of our burdens! Hey friend, THERE IS HOPE!

THREE HARD WORDS

Of more worth is one honest man to society, and in the sight of God, than all the crowned ruffians that ever lived. --Thomas Paine

Proverbs 28:13, He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy.

From the pew to the pulpit, there are three words that none of us like to say but they are often needed in order to make progress in this life. “I was wrong or I have sinned” are those three words. We do not like them because pride gets in our way to admit when we have committed sin.

When we are unwilling to admit to ourselves, others, and most importantly to our Saviour that we failed Him once again it makes us miserable, unstable, and unusable in the House of God. However, those three words will also deliver us from the bondage of sin. Aaron said it this way in Numbers 12, “we have sinned”. David said it this way in 2 Samuel 12, “I have sinned”. Achan said it this way but it was too late, “Indeed I have sinned”.

Friend, before you lose your family, how about saying those three hard words and trust the Saviour to make all things right! I am reminded this morning of Psalm 32:5, I acknowledged my sin unto thee, and mine iniquity have I not hid. I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the LORD; and thou forgavest the iniquity of my sin. Selah.

HANDLE IT WELL

The only place where success comes before work is a dictionary.

-Sassoon

Psalm 127:1, Except the LORD build the house, they labour in vain that build it: except the LORD keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain.

Throughout the Word of God, we see men and women faced with choices in their work. These choices define who they were. For example, Job is known for his faithfulness, Korah for his rebellion, Ruth for her devotion, Paul for his persistence, and Jesus for His sacrifice.

Where did these men and women, except Korah, learn how to work in such a way that they successfully gained their reputations? They learned it from the Lord. Where do we learn how to handle things well; from the Word of God!

Are you struggling to know how to handle things well building a reputation for yourself and more importantly for the Lord? Quit trying so hard and let the Lord do the work. If He builds it, you know it will be done right! The best way to learn the how to’s in life is GET UP, GET READY, and GO TO CHURCH! Start off by making it to Sunday School!

JUST DO IT

Just tell someone about Jesus today!

1 Peter 3:15, But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear:

The world around us is going to Hell. Satan is fighting with all his strength in these last days. He is loving all of the commotion because it keeps us so busy, we miss opportunities to share the Gospel. We miss opportunities to be doing what the Lord has said to do. We are so busy with ballgames, piano practice, and Fox News that we are missing what Satan is doing right in front of our eyes! He is robbing our children with the sounds and sights this world has to offer.

Child of God, there is absolutely nothing wrong with your kids being involved in sports, fine arts, or anything that may add to the work of the ministry! But, if you are so busy you can’t tell someone what Jesus did for you, you’re too busy! It may be time to slow down and reevaluate your priorities. I am reminded of Mark 8:36  this morning, For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?—What about someone else’s soul?

LIFE MATTERS

Our lives are a manifestation of what we think about God. -Anonymous

1 John 5:12, He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.

While some people get caught up in race, sexual preference, or nationality, when the rubber meets the road, ALL LIVES MATTER to the Lord! He did not die only for the white or black. He did not only die for the Latino or Swedish. He did not only die for the rich or poor. Jesus came for the whosoever will’s in this life. As the old kid’s song goes, red and yellow, black and white, they are all precious in His sight, Jesus loves all the children of the world!

That means He loves you! No matter what you have done, He can save you! No matter where you come from, He can save you! No matter how poor or rich you may be, He can save you! Will you repent of your sin and trust Jesus as your Saviour? Your life matters to Him!

SIGNATURES

A signature is an identifier of who you are or what you are known for.

Luke 2:49, And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father's business?

I grew up watching wrestling. (I know, it’s all fake. Until you get slapped across the chest with a Wahoo McDaniel chop that is!) Anyway, we went to matches in Greensboro and Raleigh, NC about two or three times a year. Sometimes we went to smaller events such as the one we had on my home town ball field. Whether in the big cities or on ball fields in small mill towns, the wrestlers were known for their signature moves, calls, or even “uniforms”. Ric Flair is known for his “Wooo”, Dusty Rhodes for his figure four, Sting for his make-up, Hacksaw Jim Duggins with his two-by-four on his shoulder, and Ivan and Nikita Koloff for being Russians. Each one of these men portrayed some signature move, had a special call, or piece of their uniform to sell their image, to identify them.

In the book of Luke, Joseph, Mary, and Jesus had went to Jerusalem to worship. On the way back home, they had realized, Jesus was missing. When they returned to Jerusalem looking for Him, they found Him in the Temple, “sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and asking them questions.” When asked, “What are you doing?” He said, “I must be about my Father’s business.” He came here with no other purpose than that of God’s Will. Jesus came to seek and save that which was lost. That is Jesus’ signature!

Friend, it ought to be our signature as well! We ought to be about our Father’s business! If we are not, we are missing the purpose of the church; to spread the Good News of the Gospel.

What is your signature? What are you known for?

GET THE WHOLE TRUTH!

Don't you know my friend, it is not the most fluent man that has the greatest effect with a jury?  It is the man who tells the truth. - D.L Moody

John 8:32, And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

Often, someone comes up to me and tells me their story about someone else. I ask them, “Who told you that?” Some say, “Well so and so told me.”. I ask, “Did you go ask the person they were talking about? Did you ask them whether if it was true or not before you started to spread the gossip?” Most if not all of them say, “No.” It is sad that people will just blindly believe a person that told them some untrue gossip and begin to tell others, never questioning what was told to them.

Hey friend, I have some Truth for you this morning. Jesus loves you! He gave Himself for you! Pick up a copy of God’s Word and get the whole Truth of what He did to prove His love for you! As someone once said, “He loved you so much that He got up on a Cross, stretched out His arms, and He gave His life for you to have life and have it more abundant!“

LISTEN TO THE PREACHER

The best way to revive a church is to build a fire in the pulpit. - D.L. Moody

Romans 10:14, How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?

Many would love for the Bible Believing Preacher whether he be an evangelist, missionary, pastor, or lay preacher to be silent and let sin have it’s way. They do not want to hear the preaching of God’s Word. They do not want to hear the terrible diagnosis of their sin sick state. So many pastors, in fear of losing a tither, preaches something other than the Gospel of Jesus Christ. They preach a come as you are leave as you came message. They preach without repentance. They preach a bloodless Gospel. They preach but their message isn’t what you find in the Word of God for a man, woman, boy or girl needs to do in order to be saved from their sin sick state!

Friend, it says in 1 Corinthians 1:18, For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God. Don’t ever think you will be good enough to get into heaven! Without you repenting and trusting Jesus Christ as Saviour, you will only be headed to a Devils hell. So do your family and friends a huge favor, listen to the preacher!

YOU CAN’T TAKE IT WITH YOU

Empty handed we came, empty handed we will go.

1 Timothy 6:7, For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out.

I don’t know about you but I really don’t remember much about my birth. I was there but I don’t know who else was. That’s not exactly true, my mom was there, lol. I wasn’t there when my son was born, so I can’t really tell you much about who was at his birth other than my wife. Anyway, I was there when my oldest daughter was born and you know what, she didn’t have anything when she was born. No cell phone, no bank account, no friend’s list, or anything! And guess what, she will not be taking anything out of this life either!

Friend, there isn’t anything wrong with saving for old age, investing in your future, or taking care of yourself during retirement. However, if that is what you live for, you’re missing the privilege of giving! The blessing in giving is seeing how God uses what you give to bless others! Whether it be giving to missionaries in their God called ministry or if it is being a blessing to someone in need, you will always be blessed in helping others! And just remember, you may chase that almighty dollar throughout life but you can’t take it with you!
