LOOKING FOR A FEW GOOD SERVANTS  

            When a man turns to God desiring to serve Him, God directs his attention to the world and its need. -Brunner

Ezekiel 22:30, And I sought for a man among them, that should make up the hedge, and stand in the gap before me for the land, that I should not destroy it: but I found none.

            When I used to run my own business, I often needed a bucket. I would go to the garage and search for one. I’d go to our building looking for one. Eventually I would find one but most of the time they all had something in common, they had holes in them! So, I would either grab a roll of duct tape or a tube of caulking and the fixing of the bucket began. Before I knew it, I would be filling it up with whatever.

            Friend, the Lord is searching for a few good servants. You don’t have to be perfect, educated, or sinless. None of us are fully educated for the work God has called us to do. None of us are qualified to do the work. But all of us that are gloriously saved by the grace of God has the potential to be a good servant. All we need to do is make ourselves available to what God’s Will is for our lives. Will you yield to His will?

YOU’RE REPUTATION PRECEDES YOU  

            If I take care of my character, my reputation will take care of itself. -Moody

Philippians 1:27, Only let your conversation be as it becometh the gospel of Christ: that whether I come and see you, or else be absent, I may hear of your affairs, that ye stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel;

            What type of reputation do you have? What are you known for? What do people say about you when you are not around? I often wish I could be a bug on a wall just to hear what people say about me. But you know what? If we take care of our character, no matter what someone else may say, it will be okay between us and our Saviour. He knows our motives. He knows our character. He knows why we do what we do because our reputation precedes us. And that ought to be enough!

YOU’RE JUST NOT THAT GOOD

Romans 3:23, For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;

            There are some that are striving to get to Heaven. As the world looks upon them, they are good people. They go to work, pay their taxes, give to the poor, and they might even give some to the work of the church. They don’t steal, commit murder, or commit adultery. But will that get them to Heaven?

            Well, look at scripture for the answer; Ephesians 2:8-9, For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. According to the Word of God, you’re just not that good!

            What will get you to Heaven—Jesus! Jesus is the only way you or I will get to Heaven:

John 3:17, For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.

            Acts 4:12, Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.       

            John 14:6, Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

CLEAR VISION  

            Give us clear vision that we may know where to stand and what to stand for, because unless we stand for something, we shall fall for anything. --Peter Marshall

Romans 12:1-2, I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

            Foggy mornings always remind me of a conversation I had with my son several years ago. We were riding to school one morning and out of the blue he said, “Dad, that fog is like sin, it clouds our way.” I was like, who are you and what did you do with my four-year old son.

            But the more I grow in the Lord and think back on that conversation, He is right on target! Sin will cloud our thought life in such a way that we will not even comprehend what we are doing. We will make wrong turns. We will go deeper and deeper into darkness. We will get caught up in the sins of this world and get lost in the midst of it all.

            Christian friend, get as close to the Light as you can and stay right there! When you do, you will have clear vision for every chapter of your life!

BE AN OPEN BIBLE

1 Corinthians 3:6, I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase.

            What kind of seed are we planting? How are we tending to the seeds in the ground? What example will we set at work today?  Students, how about the example at school? Parents, how about the example before our kids? Let me remind you of a simple but true statement, “We are the only Bible some people read.” What are they reading about the Saviour of the World?

            Father, help us today to be what and who we are in You to everyone we come in contact with. Lord helps us to be just as real as Christ; to care for the lost, hurting, and dying soul. To care for our brothers and sisters in Christ. Father, help us invest our lives in someone today!

GET UP AND GO TELL  

            To be glad instruments of God's love in this imperfect world is the service to which man is called. -Schweitzer

Mark 5:18-19, And when he was come into the ship, he that had been possessed with the devil prayed him that he might be with him. Howbeit Jesus suffered him not, but saith unto him, Go home to thy friends, and tell them how great things the Lord hath done for thee, and hath had compassion on thee.

            As we walk in this world of sin, God has commanded us to be salt and light in an untasteful dark world! Jesus had healed the maniac of Gadara. The sane man, now dress and in his right mind, wants to go with Jesus. Jesus tells Him, go home, tell your friends of the great things the Lord has done for him and of His great compassion. Why; because Jesus knew they needed to hear as well!

            Church, yes, we need to GET UP, GET READY, and GO TO CHURCH this morning, but we also need to get the Message of Jesus outside of the Church House! We cannot only come to church never getting out and sharing the Hope of the Good News. We must be that salt and light Jesus desires us to be by sharing the great things He has done for us and His great compassion He has had on us! GET UP AND GO TELL!

GET OUT AND TOUCH A LIFE  

The people with whom we travel are much more important than the place to which we travel. -Wright

Proverbs 13:20, He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed.

            When we fellowship with other believers it is like working out in the gym; we get wisdom in our walk, we get help for the day before us, and we get strength for the journey. It is great to have friends we can serve and grow together in this journey! Not only do we get help from other believers but we get to help someone else along their way as well!

            Are you touching lives with God’s grace or are you taking it all in hoarding it up for yourself? Let me remind you what Jesus said, “It’s more blessed to give than receive.” So touch a life for the glory and honor of God!

LET ME SIT RIGHT HERE FOR A WHILE  

            Of all created comforts, God is the lender; you are the borrower, not the owner. – Rutherford

2 Corinthians 1:3-5, Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God. For as the sufferings of Christ abound in us, so our consolation also aboundeth by Christ.

            In times of death, where do you turn? In times of despair, where do you go? When it seems as if no one is listening, where do you go so that someone does? When life is crumbling in pieces around you, do you ever wonder who will put the pieces back together? I often wonder where the unsaved person goes in their times of need. You see, for the Christian, we can go to the Lord wherever we are at, whenever we want, and as often as we need. So, with that kind of access, I, myself, can rejoice in my tribulations! I can sit down and let my Heavenly Father deal with what is going on in my life! Can you?

PAYING ATTENTION SO YOU WON’T HAVE TO PAY THE CONSEQUENCES

My son, attend unto my wisdom, and bow thine ear to my understanding: That thou mayest regard discretion, and that thy lips may keep knowledge. Proverbs 5:1-2

            Under the inspiration of God, the Lord through King Solomon tells us to attend to His wisdom. He didn’t say our own wisdom. He didn’t say the world’s wisdom. He said, “attend unto my wisdom.” His wisdom is found in His Word!

            Wake up friend! Pay attention! Walk in the Lord’s Word! Follow His Precepts! So, you will understand what to do and when to do it. So, you will know what to say and when to say it. So you won’t have to pay the consequences.

I HAVE A MESSAGE FROM THE LORD

1 Corinthians 1:18, For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.

            I pray more people would understand the importance of being in church. Going to church has a two-fold purpose; one is to evangelize the lost and the other is to edify the believer. Both are accomplished through the preaching of God’s Word.

            You might not understand why the Lord places the importance on preaching. You might not appreciate the time spent on the message. You may not even want to be there. But let me tell you this, nothing takes the place of a good ‘ole Heaven sent message form the Lord! Have you ever heard one? You’ll know if you have because it will drive you to your knees in humble thankfulness of the One Who sent it!

GOD’S HEARTBEAT

Mark 16:15, And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.

From the founding of the Church, the mission of the Church has been Missions. You may say, “What are you talking about?” As born-again believers we ought to be sharing the Good News of the Gospel with our neighbors, our co-workers, the fella at the shop, the cashier, and anyone that we meet. We can simply tell others about what Jesus has done for us and what He can do for them.

            When is the last time you have shared your faith with someone else? When is the last time you shared God’s heartbeat?

SOMETIMES YOU NEED TO BE A MARY  

            From one Martha to another, sometimes you need to be a Mary.- Sharon O’Dell

Luke 10:42, But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.

            Oftentimes, we get so busy working for the Lord that we forget to sit at His feet. We must do this, we must do that, and don’t forget about doing that thing too. Everything we set out to do is certainly done on purpose and for a purpose. However, sometimes we put more tasks on our plates than we should. Even when our calendars are full, we continue to put things on it. We believe one more thing won’t hurt. Then that one thing turns into one more thing, which then turns into one more thing. Before you know it, we are too busy being busy that we have no time to spend doing what’s most important--spending time with the Saviour. That should be a priority of our day, every single day. If you’re only spending time with Him while you’re at church, then you’re depriving yourself of the most needful thing in your life. Start today out fresh by deliberately setting time out of your day to spend with Him. You won’t regret it!

LEAVE AND CLEAVE  

            If more would leave and cleave, there would be less quitting and divorce.

Genesis 2:24, Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.

            So, this past week we got some snow. My wife and I were walking around a track getting a little exercise in and we noticed the snow clinging to the side of the trees. It was a reminder to us of the verse above. It reminded me that she should come only second to my Saviour.

            When I left my parents and married my wife, I didn’t look back. I didn’t think, what would have happened if I had never gotten married. I never questioned why I married her. (She probably many times questioned why she married me. 😊) You see, when we marry, we need to follow scripture! We need to leave Mom and Dad and we need to cleave unto our spouse, never looking back!

DROP AND PRAY

Proverbs 15:29, The LORD is far from the wicked: but he heareth the prayer of the righteous.

            We have heard about prayer. We have talked about prayer. We may even pray over every meal we eat. But do we really invest time into our prayers? Do we share with the Lord what is truly on our hearts? Do we really believe prayer works? What would it take for you to get down on your knees, (Or seated if you can’t), and pray fervently to the Lord? You better do drop and pray before you head out the door this morning!

STICKING TO WHAT GOD ALLOWS       

        Water is the only drink for a wise man. -Thoreau

Proverbs 20:1, Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise.

            I am pretty sure God’s Word is clear on the matter of alcohol; a Christian ought to never put a drink up to their lips. Nothing eternally good has ever come from someone who is a drinker. Plenty of bad has come from an individual that drinks; battered wives, beaten children, adultery and other forms of fornication, car wrecks, loss of life, and the list goes on and on.

            Before you lose something you love or you hurt yourself beyond repair, put the bottle down. Put the can down. Put the flask down. Give it up or it may just grab your life by the neck, choking every ounce of life out of it!

IT’S TIME TO RISE UP CHRISTIAN FRIEND  

            All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. - Edmund Burke

Ephesians 6:13, Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

            Our world is quickly drifting away from anything that can be considered moral. We have come to the point in which that which Bible says is wrong is right and what was right is wrong. For example; there is nothing wrong with homosexuality, abortion, or lying. Homosexuality is a choice in which anyone can decide what gender they want to be attempting to deny the way God created them. Abortion is a nice way of saying someone murders an unborn child. Lying is explained away with situation ethics.

            Christian friend, there is no time to sit down. There isn’t a time to take a break. We must stand up, put on the armor of God, and give account of the hope that lives in us! We must share the Gospel at all cost! We must get the news out! We must rise up and take the world for the cause of Christ! Will you stand in the gap? Will you rise for the glory and honor of God? If not you, then who? If not now, then when? No better day to start than today!

RESISTING MEANS A REMOVAL

            The devil has at least one good quality that he will flee if we resist him. -Though cowardly in him, it is safety for us. -Edwards

James 4:7, Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

            Our Saviour didn’t leave us alone to fight our battles. He gave us the Holy Spirit to help us in our times of temptation. If we yield to the Spirit, we will be able to flee the lustful temptations the devil throws at us. If we resist the devil he will flee because the devil can’t handle denial! Praise God for the victory the Lord gave us when we got saved!

EXCUSES, EXCUSES, AND MORE EXCUSES  

            The Christian church is a society of sinners.  It is the only society in the world, membership in which is based upon the single qualification that the candidate shall be unworthy of membership. -Morrison

Psalm 55:14, We took sweet counsel together, and walked unto the house of God in company.

            Oh, there are plenty excuses of why people don’t go to church…. I don’t feel well. I’ve got to work. Have you seen my yard? I have company coming over. I don’t have to come to church every Sunday to be a good Christian. The pews aren’t padded. Those snotty nosed bus kids are aggravating. I’ve got to take the kids to ball practice. My son has a playoff game. My daughter has this project due. My son didn’t get his homework finished. The music isn’t great. The music is too loud. The music isn’t loud enough. I go to the Saturday night service. The preacher’s message was too long. The preacher’s message wasn’t long enough. Did you see what so and so was wearing? Do you know how much laundry three kids can produce in a week? One of the most profound, Sunday is the only day I get to sleep in Preacher.

            I know it’s Tuesday. I know you made your excuse of why you didn’t go to church Sunday. Will you, for a minute, consider this? When Jesus Christ got up on the Cross of Calvary, He didn’t make excuses. He didn’t say, “Let someone else do it.” He didn’t say, “They are not worth it.” He didn’t say, “Isn’t there some other way.” No, He didn’t make all of the excuses like we do. However, what He did do was…

            He suffered beatings and torture like no man before. He got up on that Cross, had a crown of thorns embedded into His skull, had a spear pierce His side into His very heart, He stretched out His arms, and died for you and me. Friend, that is love-incomparable, incomprehensible, and in every way deserving for you and I to get up and go to church not just on Sundays but each and every day that the doors are opened. So, instead of making an excuse why you can’t come this Sunday, try making an excuse for why you can’t do all of those other things that usually keep you out of church.

TIC TOK  

            To the philosopher, time is one of the fundamental quantities.  To the average man, time has something to do with dinner. -VanHorn

2 Corinthians 6:2, (For he saith, I have heard thee in a time accepted, and in the day of salvation have I succoured thee: behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.)

            The clock is ticking away; a second, a minute, an hour, a day, a month, a year, and before you know it you’re an old man wondering where all of the years went. One thing about it, time does not stand still! When you happy, the days fleet away. When you’re sad they seem to drag along. None the less, the clock still ticks.

            What are you doing with the time God has given you? Are you investing it wisely? Do you put the time to good use? Do you grasp the moments to tell others about Jesus or do you pass them by with out a care? Make a conscientious decision this morning to tell someone about Jesus today. Share what He has done for you. It’s as simple as that. As one old Preacher said, we are just beggars telling another beggar where to find bread. The bread we have is the Bread of Life! Share it today!

BE FREE

Galatians 5:1, Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.

            Americans have certain unalienable rights; life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. These rights didn’t come without a cost. For over 240 years, men and women have given their lives so that Americans can enjoy these freedoms. Beginning at the Battles of Lexington and Concord until modern day wars of Iraq and Afghanistan, we see lives that have fallen so men and women can be free!

            Christians have been set free as well. We have been set free from our sin and shame because Jesus gave His life so we can be free! Over 2,000 years ago Jesus laid down His life, got up on a tree, and gave His life so that all could come to repentance. He gave His life so you and I could be saved! He gave His life so we could be free!

Are you free? Have you been set free from your sin and shame? If not, you can be! GET UP, GET READY , and GO TO CHURCH with this verse on your mind: “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.” Romans 10:9
